PNHR MACEDONIA FARM
CENIBRA’s Macedonia Farm is located on the right bank of Doce River in the municipality of Ipaba, eastern Minas Gerais. Out of its approximately 3,000 hectares around 50% are native woods. The rest of the area is planted with eucalyptus forests using state-of-the-art techniques to achieve maximum wood output while preserving the environment’s production capabilities.
Macedonia Farm’s native woods are one of the main Atlantic Forest remnants in Minas Gerais. Part of this farm (560 hectares) is recognized by the Brazilian Environment and Renewable Resources Institute (IBAMA) as a Private Natural Heritage Reserve (PNHR) according to Decree No. 111 of October 14, 1994.
Moreover, PNHR Macedonia Farm has the status of a High Conservation Value Area (HCVA). This terminology is adopted by the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) to designate areas that are remarkably significant or extremely important from the biological, ecological, social, or cultural standpoints. In the specific case of Macedonia Farm, the main attribute behind its HCVA status is the presence a significant number of species of the Brazilian wildlife in danger of extinction.
On top of contributing to biodiversity and natural resources conservation in the region, Macedonia Farm shows that it is perfectly feasible to reconcile production activities with the conservation of natural resources while maintaining ecosystem services provided by a rural property.
