Park of Stories

Heritage-related education and construction of the imagination with the artist Flora Manga

Strengthening citizenship relations and awakening the cultural imagination of the people of Belo Oriente through universal, popular stories. This is what the Park of Stories Project, sponsored by CENIBRA, aims to achieve by drawing people’s attention to the use and preservation of public heritage. Created by artist and storyteller Raquel Vieira – also known as Flora Manga – and relying on funding through the Federal Cultural Incentive Act, the project seeks to enhance people’s recognition of public spaces as places of construction of sociocultural bonds and a sense of belonging.

Based on this function of heritage-related education, some storytelling sessions will take place in the Multifunction Park built and maintained by Cenibra in Cachoeira Escura in partnership with the local istration. This Park is a leisure and cultural complex open to the public at large. The project highlights this wonderful space and entices people to use it more frequently.

In addition to storytelling in public spaces and educational facilities, the Project offers storytelling and heritage-related education workshops for educators and the publication of a children’s book distributed for free to schools in the town and surroundings. Initially, three stories are available to the public.

Flora Manga is the artistic name of storyteller Raquel Vieira, graduated in Physical Education (major in early childhood education) from the Federal University of Minas Gerais. She is also a contortionist, capoeira practitioner, and actress, and uses an open story technique with everyday objects that are given new meanings throughout the narrative, stimulating the imagination and ensuring constant interaction with the audience. Since 2012, she has idealized and carried out heritage-related education projects through storytelling in public spaces in the so-called Steel Valley region.

The shows and workshops are free, but require booking and prior registration. Enrollment and scheduling by schools and entities can be made through the website http://www.parquedehistoricenibra-br.diariomineiro.net.br/ and by phone/WhatsApp +55 31 98711 0706.
