Recently, a forest fire could have turned into a major event and impacted the residents of São Gonçalo do Rio Baixo and João Monlevade and local biodiversity if it were not for CENIBRA’s quick and precise action.
Fire outbursts on the sides of BR-381 highway, in a native forest area neighboring the Abrecampo Plantation Project, were identified by a Company employee, who immediately notified the CCTV team.
After calling the Fire Department and the Police, CENIBRA provided to actions aimed at containing the fire, which included the allocation of personnel, equipment, and water trucks. The flames spread from a fire set in a pile of rubbish left on the side of the highway.
Cássio Alves Gomes, Forest Protection supervisor, highlighted the importance of raising awareness about inappropriate waste disposal. “In addition to damaging the environment and putting the lives of people and animals at risk, this irresponsible practice can cause large fires,” he pointed out.
The prevailing weather conditions led to an extensive spread of the fire, which was controlled by the prompt action of firefighting teams, relying on CENIBRA’s invaluable .
The individual who set fire to the rubbish was identified and educated about the socio-environmental damage caused by the practice, a crime provided for in the Brazilian Penal Code, Article 250 that can give rise to fines and imprisonment.
